Hi [working title]
When folks hear I studied Film in college, their first question is always, "What's your favorite movie?!"
And for the longest time I never had an answer, but I quickly realized that I needed a answer for this eternally inevitable and unavoidable question.
My answer: Moulin Rouge. [I'm a hopeless romantic, what can I say?]
That's been my canned answer for the last five years, and though I thoroughly enjoy the film, I still have a hard time saying it's my favorite and I should really come up with something new. I saw Zootopia last year and it was HILARIOUS, but it's still not my favorite. I guess my taste isn't exactly highbrow. #bunnycop
The soft glow of the Hollywood lights isn't exactly what lured me into this field of work nor was it my love of movies or my obsession as a film buff [hence my favorite movie isn't Citizen Kane or The Shawshank Redemption. #filmschoolanswers] even though I love a good movie and a tub of fake-buttered popcorn just as much as the next guy.
What I really love about film is the incredible experience of making something out of nothing.
You literally start with nothing, or maybe a small idea, and by the end of it all you've got a real, tangible, visible thing. A thing you can see! And if you do it well, this thing takes on a life of its own and makes people cry or laugh or feel something.
[Maybe this is why God created all of this. It really is an exhilarating experience. #lettherebelight]
Good art provokes emotion.
And good stories make sense of the world and provide structure for our lives.
From now on, anytime someone asks me what my favorite movie is, I'll have them scan the QR code that will be tattooed on my arm that will be linked to this blog post. [Kidding.]
I'll actually be using this platform as a way to:
1. Share my work and a few thoughts on it.
2. Become a better writer and creator.
Peace be with you. Come what may.
PS: For the longest time, my goal was to make a video that would make someone cry. Which finally happened during my tenure at a summer camp in college. [Campers and staff are real suckers for a good recap video.]
